PLEASE NOTE, THIS PRESENTATION:
- IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR RURAL SCHOOLS
With extensive experience in his field, Greg is an expert in CNC programming, 3D printing, composite manufacturing (carbon fiber), product development, and other cutting-edge advanced manufacturing processes. He has designed and manufactured many products, many of which are complex aerospace components - some have even gone to the international space station. Leading the advanced manufacturing sector at Confederation College's Applied Research Department, he's gained a reputation for innovative problem-solving and dedication to growing the sector of advanced manufacturing in Northwestern Ontario.
Presentation:
Greg's presentation will start with an introduction of himself. He will explain the path he took for his career and how it led to his position today. He will go over the different ways that he designs and manufactures products (CNC, 3D printing, composites), while bringing examples for students to see and also showing off some computer software that he uses.
For the second half of the presentation, Greg will have an activity he can do with the students. He can adapt this section depending on the grade level and/or to align with school curriculum. He is willing to work with teachers to choose/develop an activity that works for their class.
Examples of activities:
Optional Activity 1 - Build Your Own Catapult
Students will work hands-on to assemble their own small catapult using components made from a variety of materials, including carbon fiber, aluminum, and plastic. Each component is produced using a different manufacturing process, allowing students to directly see and feel how material choice and manufacturing methods affect design and performance. Once assembled, students will test their catapults and compare results, reinforcing key concepts related to engineering, materials, and manufacturing. Students will each get to take home their own catapult.
Optional Activity 2 - Laser Scanning
Students will be given a demonstration of a laser scanner, which is able to turn physical objects into a virtual computer design. The class will choose an object (or maybe even a student/teacher) to scan, and the students will watch the laser scanner do its job. It is a very flashy machine that draws attention and is a popular activity for tech week.
Optional Activity 3 - CAD Modeling + 3D printing
Students will collaboratively choose an object to design, such as a school logo or sports team emblem. Greg will create the 3D model live in front of the class, encouraging student input and discussion throughout the design process. A 3D printer can be brought in to demonstrate how the digital model is transformed into a physical object. After the session, Greg can print the class’s final design and return the finished pieces as souvenirs for the students.
Optional Activity 4 - CNC Programming (recommended for high school only)
Students will choose an object to create, such as a school mascot or sports team logo. Greg will demonstrate the process of developing a CNC program, allowing students to watch virtual simulations of the machining process in real time. This activity provides students with a clear understanding of the capabilities and applications of CNC machining. Greg will also discuss the advantages of CNC technology in modern manufacturing and highlight the growing demand for skilled CNC operators and programmers in Northwestern Ontario, emphasizing the role these machines play in keeping Canada competitive in the global manufacturing industry.
